Larkspur CO Real Estate, Larkspur area and Community Information

Where Larkspur Came From
Larkspur began long before the first pilgrims came to the area. When it was first discovered, Larkspur was home to the Ute, Kiowa, Araphoe and Cheyenne tribes but quickly developed into a popular stage stop and eventually a resort. The first name for the town was not Larkspur, it was Huntsville, named after the territorial governor at the time, Alexander Hunt. It was not until 1871 that the name Huntsville was established and the town began to be more than a resort becoming prosperous in fields like lumber and sandstone. Eventually the town was home to two sawmills, a hotel, two stores, a school for children to learn and study and a blacksmith shop. In 1916, the American Federation of Human rights built their headquarters which is still located in the same spot today. The town was incorporated in 1979. While there are still many classic Larkspur CO homes, much of the real estate in Larkspur was damaged in the flood of 1965 when Plum Creek flooded most of the town.
